LGBT&S Alliance Fund Announces Grant Recipients

Awards $52,500 to Regional Organizations Supporting LGBT&S Community

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Straight (LGBT&S) Alliance Fund, which supports innovative programs and initiatives that benefit the LGBT community in Southern Arizona, is pleased to announce it will grant $52,500 to 15 regional programs as a result of its 2015 competitive grant round. Since its inception in 1999, the LGBT&S Alliance Fund has awarded 144 grants to more than 56 different organizations totaling $614,712.

Alliance Fund Grant Chair, Sylvia Mulka said, at the close of the recent grant round “This year the LGBT&S Alliance Fund will award 15 grants to twelve nonprofit groups. It was an honor to serve as Grant Chair and to work with the 12 community volunteers and board members who helped determine the awards.”

The LGBT&S Alliance Fund was created in 1999 by the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona in partnership with the National Lesbian and Gay Community Funding Partnership.  The Fund addresses a chronic pattern of underfunding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender programs and supports efforts to address these issues through philanthropy and endowment building, making grants in five areas:

  1. Youth and Youth-Parent Issues: Increasing support for LGBT individuals and their parents/families
  2. Human Services Issues: Improving health care, substance abuse treatment, and social services
  3. Political Advocacy & Involvement: Educating legislators and working for changes that promote civil rights for all
  4. Education Issues: Educating both the larger community and the LGBT community to promote acceptance, health and well-being
  5. LGBT Community Infrastructure: Giving organizations the tools they need to be effective

“Grants this year will go toward programs including a community forum on LGBT senior issues, scholarships for youth, and sexual education, among other important initiatives,” said Kristen Birner, Chairperson of the LGBT&S Alliance Fund.  “Our sincere thanks go to those who work to make these programs possible and are dedicated to changing the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Southern Arizona.”
